Connecting Education to the World of Work

Funded by the Department for Education, the South Midlands Careers Hub operates across six local authorities: North Northamptonshire, West Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Luton, Bedford Central, and Bedford Borough. Its core mission is to link the education system directly to the commercial world, continuously raising the quality of careers education in schools while promoting apprenticeships and vocational pathways.

Describing the Hub’s role as “the jam in the sandwich,” the team acts as an essential connection between schools and businesses. By listening to the specific needs of both educators and employers, the Hub creates tailored, mutually beneficial relationships that build confidence on both sides.

Flexible Engagement for Busy SMEs

A common challenge for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is the perceived burden on time and resources. However, as explained during the conversation, employer engagement is fully flexible and tailored to what each business can offer.

Whether a company wants to contribute strategically to shaping local skills strategies or operationally by supporting workshops, mock interviews, or career fairs, the Hub facilitates meaningful connections without overwhelming the business. Crucially, the Hub’s services are fully funded and entirely free to employers, offering dedicated guidance to demystify the process of working with education partners.

Busting Apprenticeship Stereotypes and Preparing for the Future

The conversation also tackled widespread misconceptions surrounding young workers and apprenticeships. Employers often harbour hesitations based on generational stereotypes or fears regarding staff retention. However, training providers actively handle background administrative responsibilities—such as account management and setting out learning journeys—ensuring employers are fully supported throughout the process.

Beyond traditional trades, modern apprenticeships now encompass a broad spectrum of technical and strategic roles, including artificial intelligence, digital marketing, business intelligence, logistics, and sustainability. For SMEs, offering these opportunities provides strong succession planning, builds brand awareness, and establishes the business as an employer of choice.

By taking proactive steps to engage with young people before they enter the job market, businesses can actively shape the skilled professionals of tomorrow while securing their own operational future.
