Why KBB Apprentice Swap was a great idea for young employees

As our Journey of an Apprentice project approaches its final chapters, we recently had the privilege of visiting the Abingdon & Witney College Skills Centre. It was an inspiring day where we saw first-hand how the college is shaping the future workforce and providing opportunities for young people to thrive in the trades.

During the visit, Simon sat down with Mark, the Centre Manager, to ask some crucial questions about how the college supports both apprentices and employers.

How does the college encourage local SMEs to get involved?

Mark explained that the college is always looking for ways to connect with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“We hold employer events, run open sessions, and I’m personally active in community employment plans to engage SMEs. It’s about showing them what we do here and how they can get involved.”

How has Adroit Services supported the college?

Mark highlighted the trust and collaboration built between the two organisations:

“Adroit placed their confidence in us by moving their apprentices here. They shared their needs and helped shape programmes that better reflect the type of work they do. One key example was shifting from day release to block release training, which has since attracted more employers to get involved.”

What capacity does the college have to meet industry needs?

With the government aiming to build 1.5 million homes, capacity is critical. Mark told us:

“We currently have around 250 learners, but we’re aiming to double that within the next 24 months. The facilities are ready — the challenge is getting SMEs on board and ensuring pay structures make apprenticeships viable.”

What motivates young apprentices — money or ambition?

“Of course, money matters to 16- and 17-year-olds, especially in trades like plumbing and electrical where pay is higher. But once they’re involved, ambition takes over. Many want to run their own business or become self-employed. Apprenticeships spark that entrepreneurial mindset.”

How is the facility funded, and what are the challenges in staffing?

Mark shared that the centre was initially funded through government and LEP support, with ongoing investment from the college. The bigger challenge, however, lies in finding qualified tutors.

“We’re lucky with our team, but it’s tough. Financial packages in colleges can’t always compete with what skilled tradespeople earn in the field. Plus, new lecturers often need additional qualifications, which not everyone is willing to take on later in their careers.”

What advice would you give to a young person wanting to start an apprenticeship?

“Be confident. Knock on doors. Don’t be afraid to hear ‘no’ — even from the same employer more than once. Drop in a CV, visit merchants, and put yourself in the right place at the right time. Persistence and passion go a long way.”

Apprenticeship vs University: which is better for today’s job market?

Mark was clear in his view:

“Both routes have value, but in today’s market, apprenticeships offer the edge. They give real-world experience, pressure handling, and practical skills that employers need straight away. University grads often have to start again from scratch, whereas apprentices are already job-ready.”

Our conversation with Mark reinforced the vital role colleges like Abingdon & Witney play in bridging the skills gap. By working closely with employers, adapting training to real business needs, and supporting young people with both skills and confidence, they are helping secure the future of our industries.

This visit marked the pre-last chapter of The Journey of an Apprentice — and it’s clear that the lessons we’ve gathered will inspire businesses, apprentices, and parents alike to see the true value of apprenticeships.

👏 A huge thank you to Mark and his team for their time and openness, and to all our project partners for making this journey possible:
